Mozambique: Why a pregnant 17-year-old was attacked with machete by her “husband”

A 17-year-old girl has been seriously injured and is hospitalised after being attacked with a machete by the 40-year-old man she lives with, in a premature marriage.
The Secretary of State for Youth and Employment reports the incident as happening in Mossurize district, Manica province, on June 8.
Due to the seriousness of her injuries, the victim, Paquone Francisco, who is 24 weeks (six months) pregnant, was transferred to the intensive care unit at Chimoio Provincial Hospital.
The Secretary of State for Youth and Employment explained that, under the government’s “Eu Sou Capaz” programme, Francisco had been given a school uniform and learning material, to encourage her to go back to school.
When her “partner” learned of the support, he claimed a lover was paying the expenses, and became violent, delivering strong machete blows to her head and face.
Police say that the accused is in custody.
