The World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday appealed to donors for $82 million (€68 million) to assist hundreds of thousands of people facing severe hunger in northern Mozambique.
“In the wake of the heinous attacks on Palma, entire families have had to abandon their belongings and livelihoods and flee for safety,” WFP spokesman Tomson Phiri said in Geneva.
The UN agency aims to assist 750,000 displaced people and vulnerable members of host communities in Cabo Delgado, Nampula, Niassa and Zambezia provinces.
The target population represents 78% of the 950,000 people whom WFP says are facing severe hunger.
The humanitarian agency warned that the increasing attacks in the region are worsening an already complex situation, after three and a half years of conflict, with more than 2,500 dead and 700,000 displaced.
In the immediate term, WFP is managing the stocks available in Mozambique to make emergency food distributions to 50,000 people who have fled the violence in Palma.
