President Filipe Nyusi announced yesterday that all schools in the country would remain closed unless Covid-19 preventative conditions were met, a step back from the phased resumption of face-to-face classes announced on June 28.
“We will keep in force all the measures already announced. This means that we will keep schools closed at all levels until the necessary basic hygiene conditions are confirmed,” the head of state said in an address to the nation.
“In the same way, the holding of religious services and celebrations remains banned until they can be safely restarted,” he added. Authorisation for religious services was never announced, but there have been several meetings on the subject.
“This position aims to give institutions time for better preparation; we therefore call for the work started to be continued safely and swiftly,” he concluded.
The restrictions are part of the Covid-19 prevention measures in force in the country, which has been in a state of emergency since April 1st and will continue to be so until July 30th, after three extensions, with limitations on gatherings, the banning of events and the mandatory use of face masks.
Filipe Nyusi said he insisted on listening to the sensitivity of “all Mozambicans”.
“Only in this way, collectively, can we prepare society for the new normal. It is our goal to find a balance between ensuring Mozambicans’ health and the need to revive the economy and social life,” he said.
The head of state addressed the nation 13 days before the end of the period of the current state of emergency, adding that, “at that time, a more complete and definitive assessment of the pandemic situation” will be made.
Mozambique had, by Thursday (July 16) registered a cumulative total of 1,383 Covid-19 cases, with 380 recoveries and nine deaths.
