Mozambique: Wave of murders sparks outrage among Beira residents

“From the way people are murdered in Beira, it looks like there are terroristshere . Victims beheaded without pity or mercy, something which had never happened before.”
So said resident Rosa Raice on Monday through her tears after yet another macabre death in the city, this time in the Chingussura neighbourhood.
The body of a young woman was discovered on Monday morning, another grisly chapter in the list of women murdered in the provincial capital of Sofala.
The death of the 24-year-old, choked to death with her own underwear after being raped by individuals unknown and still at large, has left Chingussura furious once again.
The outrage comes from the fact that, in recent times, women are raped and killed with such frequency in Beira. In the last three weeks of October alone, 13 murders were reported in the city’s suburbs, which, residents say, creates panic and deters free movement, especially at night.
