The Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources, João Machatine, said on Wednesday that any revision of the water tariff according to the formula approved by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, would depend on the country’s economic situation.
“On Tuesday, the government approved a formula which automatically indexes water tariffs in light of the current economic situation,” Machatine told the press on Wednesday during the inauguration of the Sabiè Water Treatment Plant, in Maputo province.

“It is nothing different from what we have been doing, in terms of increasing water tariffs,” he added.
According to the minister, “This time, it will be based on a formula that will give more autonomy to the water regulatory authorities, so that they can change the tariffs depending on the macroeconomic indicators”. So far, no tariffs have been altered.
Regarding the deficiency of water distribution capacity throughout the country, Machatine said that there was already the capacity to supply water without restrictions, but limitations would remain in place, to avoid waste.
“The Sábiè Water Treatment Plant allows for 24-hour-a-day water supply. But, as we were saying, our intention is that the practice of water rationalisation, acquired over these past five years, prevails. For that end, it is important that we restrict the supply,”” Machatine said.
“When a product abounds, there is a tendency to waste it. That is why we are going to restrict it – so that people continue to monitor their use of water, not because there is no supply capacity,” he explained.
