The vandalisation of the water supply network of the Água da Região Do Centro (ARDC) company and overdue bills are affecting supply in the cities of Beira and Dondo, Sofala province, an official source said on Thursday.
‘We have many damaged pipes in various neighbourhoods and this is affecting our water supply to the population,’ said Novais Soca, director of ARDC’s Beira operational area.
Novais Soca, who was speaking to journalists in Beira, said that several neighbourhoods in the cities of Beira and Dondo, in Sofala province, have experienced frequent water supply restrictions due to the high number of sabotaged distribution networks.
‘The situation is worrying, but we always do our utmost to ensure that the population continues to have drinking water in their homes, this is our goal,’ he added.
In addition, the source continued, non-payment of consumption bills is also affecting the water supply.
‘Of the 72,000 customers in the city of Beira, we can assure you that not all have been paying their bills,’ he said.
Customers of Águas da Região do Centro in Beira recently expressed their indignation at the company for charging ‘high amounts’, which allegedly don’t correspond to monthly consumption.
Some of the city’s neighbourhoods, including Macurungo, Manga, Macuti and Chota, have faced serious problems with water supply restrictions.
