The catchment station of the Chicamba Supply System, in Manica province, has been out of service since 10.53 pm yesterday, following a cut in the supply of electricity in the region.
As a result, the volume of abstraction in the Chicamba reservoir drastically reduced and, consequently, lowered the pressure on the distribution network, causing a lack of water, especially at high points in the cities of Chimoio and Manica, in the towns of Messica and Gondola and in the village of Bandula, in Manica province.
Communications Officer at the Water Supply Assets and Investment Fund (FIPAG) in Manica, Cristina Monteiro, said that the interruption of the electrical current to the Chicamba station had already been communicated to Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), which is already on the ground in order to solve the problem.
The rainfall accompanied by moderate winds, thunderstorms and hail which yesterday affected various parts of the province of Manica, are the cause of the damage. EDM promises to restore electrical supply as urgently as possible.
Cristina Monteiro reassures FIPAG users, stating that the water supply in the affected places will be restored as soon as EDM reconnects power supply to the Chicamba water collection station.
