Mozambique’s Water and Sanitation Regulatory Authority (AURA) has reduced the price of water for consumers, the entity announced yesterday. The new tariffs will come into force from June 2.
“From June 2, 2025, the new drinking water tariffs will come into force, with the emphasis on the reduction in minimum domestic consumption [charges] and the introduction of preferential tariffs for schools, hospitals and other social institutions,” AURA says in a statement.
The reduction is over 30% throughout the country, for the first five cubic metres of monthly consumption.
For the regulator, improving the quality and expanding the coverage of water supply services require the implementation of balanced tariffs, a measure that reinforces the “equity, efficiency and sustainability of the service”.
“These tariffs must cover not only operational and investment costs, but also guarantee accessibility to drinking water for the most vulnerable populations. This approach ensures the economic sustainability of the system and moves towards universal access, promoting social equity,” AURA emphasises.
AURA adjusted the tariff downwards based on four “fundamental pillars”: macroeconomic factors associated with the current situation of service performance; the law that provides for exemption from Value Added Tax (VAT) for consumers of social tariffs and public entities; increased access to the basic water supply service for all, and; greater dynamism in improving the operational efficiency of the service provided by companies.
“In this way, the new tariffs reflect both real economic conditions and the search for efficiency, including access to the service for the low-income population,” the regulatory authority for water states.
