Mozambique wants to reopen borders with Tanzania

The Director General of Migration in Mozambique, Felizardo Sede, said on Wednesday that conditions are now in place for the reopening of borders with Tanzania, closed for more than three years due to terrorism in Cabo Delgado.

These are the border crossings at Nametil, Namoto and Chacamba, in Cabo Delgado province.

“From our side, we have no problems; we are waiting for our counterparts, so it is an administrative process,” Felizardo Sede told reporters in Pemba, the provincial capital, during the delivery of four vehicles to reinforce patrolling in the districts of Mocímboa da Praia, Montepuez and Pemba.

“The equipment that we are going to give them will help us respond positively in the inspection of these districts,” he predicted.

Cabo Delgado province has been facing armed insurgency for almost six years with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.

The armed insurgency has led to a military response since July 2021, with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts next to gas projects, but new attacks have emerged in the south of the region and in the neighbouring province of Nampula.

The conflict has already displaced one million people, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and caused around 4,000 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict recording project.
