The Minister of Industry and Trade yesterday invited Japan to invest in the fertiliser industry in Mozambique. Minister Silvino Moreno also wants the country back in the list of Mozambique’s main investors.
The war between Russia and Ukraine has made even clearer the need for Mozambique to invest in domestic fertiliser production to reduce its external dependence.
The Mozambican government this Tuesday seized the opportunity of the Mozambique-Japan Investment Forum to seek Japanese investment to fill the deficit.
“Mozambique and Japan can and should create synergies to minimise the environmental adversities and uncertainties of the current world economic situation through Japanese investment in the sectors of agriculture, infrastructure, energy, transformation of mineral resources, industry, tourism and hotels,” Minister of Industry and Trade Silvino Moreno said.
“Given Japan’s competitive capacity in the technological field, we hope Japan will make a comeback into the list of biggest investors in Mozambique,” Minister Moreno said at the opening of the business forum between the two countries.
In reply, Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Kenji Yamada expressed his country’s interest in investing in Mozambique in several areas.
The Mozambican private sector, represented by the Chamber of Commerce of Mozambique, wants both Japanese funding and new partnerships with Japan.
“In Mozambique, companies lack funding to make their projects viable,” Chairman of the Mozambique Chamber of Commerce Álvaro Massingue remarked. “There are projects in the area of agriculture, industry, especially in the ‘Industrialising Mozambique’ programme that Minister Moreno just mentioned. At the moment, there are several projects in the industry area waiting to be made viable and it is time for national businesspeople to take the opportunity of the presence of Japanese businesspeople to present their projects.”
The Ministry of Industry and Commerce, through the Investment Promotion Agency – APIEX,IP in coordination with the Chamber of Commerce of Mozambique and the Embassy of Japan in Maputo promoted the event in the framework of a visit of a delegation from Japan to Mozambique, headed by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Kenji Yamada, and aimed at strengthening cooperation relations and explore investment and business opportunities between the two countries. The event was chaired by Minister of Industry and Trade, Silvino Moreno.
