Coal mining company Vulcan has donated around 79 tons of products to support 30,000 people affected by Cyclone Jude in Zambézia province, in the centre of the country, it was announced this Saturday.
“[The support] totals an investment of over seven million meticais (€97.3 thousand),” said Vulcan representative Sérgio Paude, according to a statement from the Provincial Executive Council of Zambézia.
The donation was mobilized by the Mozambican First Lady, Gueta Chapo, and consists of 50 tons of rice and corn flour, 45,000 litres of cooking oil, 10 tons of salt, as well as feminine hygiene products and footwear, among others, the same note reveals.
Cyclone Jude, the most recent to affect the country, entered Mozambique on March 10, through the district of Mossuril, in the province of Nampula, causing at least 43 deaths, 41 of them in Nampula. The storm also affected Tete, Manica and Zambézia provinces in the centre of the country, and Niassa and Cabo Delgado in the north.
The latest update from the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) indicated that at least 384,877 people had been affected.
Paude also reaffirmed the commitment of the company, which mines coal in Moatize in Tete province, “to socially responsible actions”.
Mozambique recently ended the rainy season, which runs from October to April, a period in which, in addition to Jude, Cyclones Chido, on December 14, and Dikeledi, on January 13, also occurred, causing 313 deaths and leaving a trail of destruction.
The country is considered one of the most severely affected by global climate change, facing cyclical floods and tropical cyclones during the rainy season, as well as prolonged periods of severe drought.
The private Indian company Vulcan is part of the Jindal Group, with a market value of US$18 billion (€16.5 billion), and was previously active in Mozambique, operating the Chirodzi mine, also in Tete.
