Mozambican artist Noel Langa died at the Maputo Central Hospital on Thursday, at the age of 86, after a 50-year career of national and international prominence, an official source confirmed today.
“The death of Noel Langa leaves an irreparable void in our culture and challenges the new generation of artists to fill it,” wrote President of Mozambique Filipe Nyusi this morning on his Facebook page, acknowledging that “Mozambican culture is in mourning”.
Nyusi highlighted that the “great artist Noel dedicated his life to the arts and culture, having portrayed his experiences and the history of Mozambique on his canvas, through his brush, with unmistakable rich and vibrant colours”.
“The Master of the once ‘Bairro Indígena’ raised the good name of Mozambique beyond its borders, being without a doubt one of the references of the visual arts in our country, a true National Heritage,” the head of state added.
Noel Langa was born in 1938 in Mandhlhakaze, Gaza province, southern Mozambique and began studying Decorative Painting in 1960, beginning his artistic career later in life.
