The governor of the Bank of Mozambique, Rogério Zandamela, and the president of the Municipal Council of Vila de Mueda, Manuel Alavalave, recently signed a memorandum of understanding on the construction of a Metical Square in the town.
The initiative is part of the Bank of Mozambique mission to dignify the metical, one of the most important symbols of the country’s sovereignty, and to ensure that current and future generations have examples of preserving our history.
In his speech, Governor Zandamela said that building a Praça do Metical in Vila de Mueda was extremely important, since the district was a symbol of the fight against colonialism.
According to Zandamela, it was the historical importance of Mueda that led the Central Bank to take the decision to build a Metical Square there, despite the bank’s previously stated commitment to building them in provincial capitals only.
