The 7th Criminal Section of the Judicial Court of Maputo City has sentenced Trang Kiu Trang, a citizen of Vietnamese nationality, to 16 years in prison for possession and trafficking of prohibited species.
She was arrested in 2020 at Maputo International Airport in possession of 127 lion claws, 36 lion teeth and five rhinoceros horns cut into 12 pieces.
She must now pay compensation to the state of just over 21 million meticais, plus a daily fee of 5% of the national minimum wage and a 800 meticais ‘justice tax’ fine.
Mozambican legislation provides a penalty ranging from 12 to 16 years in prison for possession and trafficking of prohibited species and products.
