Families who saw their cars set on fire by criminals in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, went to the High Commission of South Africa in Maputo and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation on Wednesday, to demand justice and restitution of their property.
Still in shock, and with their minds set on obtaining restitution for their burnt-out vehicles and goods, the Mozambican citizens were received by diplomatic officials at the High Commission of South Africa. There, they expressed their concerns, and were instructed to contact the Mozambican government.
“We came here to find out what South Africa can do for us, because we lost everything, so they advised us to contact Mozambican entities, the Mozambican Consulate, the Government of Mozambique,” said Aznar Osman, one of the members of the group.
However, “from our Government, we have not received any contact. Of all of us here, no one has had any contact, no one has called and no one has done anything,” he said.
Hoping to see their problems solved, they also went to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, where they were instructed to schedule an audience with the minister, Verónica Macamo, which they did, as shown in a document seen by ‘O País’.
“We had a meeting with the part of the ministry for Legal and for Consular Affairs, where we requested an audience with the minister, and there was nothing else relevant. The entity that received us just listened to us and said it would forward the matter,” Osman recorded.
For now, the victims have no option but to wait in this atmosphere of loss and despair.
