About 400 homes are without power in the city of Xai-Xai, in the southern Mozambican province of Gaza, due to vandalized infrastructure, Mozambican Electricity (EDM) announced today.
“We are experiencing a lot of vandalism of infrastructure,” Santos Jackson, director of EDM for the Xai-Xai area, told reporters during a visit to the vandalized transformation station, noting that some appliances in nearby residents exploded during the incident.
According to the EDM representative, in addition to the enormous financial losses, this destruction affects the planning of new connections, “because the material initially planned for a new transformer station ended up being sent to an existing station that was vandalized”.
In the first six months of this year, EDM recorded losses estimated at 873,000 meticais (€11,800) as a result of vandalism in Chongoene and Limpopo districts, Gaza province.
According to EDM, the company had in 2023 suffered losses of approximately 30 million meticais (€426,000) due to the vandalism of electrical infrastructure.
In 2022, EDM lost approximately 41 million meticais (€584,000) as a result of 265 cases of vandalism.
More than 60% of the population in Mozambique has access to electricity in their homes, according to data from the Mozambican government.
