The vaccination of health professionals in Mozambique against Covid-19 started countrywide this Monday.
In the capital, Maputo, the campaign kicked off with the vaccination of Minister of Health Armindo Tiago, himself also a doctor and endocrinologist. Minister Tiago said he had chosen to be the first health professional vaccinated to set an example and demonstrate the “seriousness of the Mozambican government”.
Armindo Tiago received the first dose at around 8:00 a.m. and afterwards rested for about 15 minutes, pending any possible adverse reactions.
Following his recuperation, the minister said: “I feel good. Not bad at all.”
“The vaccine is safe,” he said, and other professionals should have it.
Also vaccinated at the same time were elderly people, another of the social strata prioritised in this first phase of vaccination, along with gravediggers, who deal with Covid-19 victims’ burial procedures.
The 200,000 doses of the Verocell vaccine donated by China will cover around 70,000 health professionals across the country, the Chinese ambassador to Mozambique assuring ‘O Pais’ in an interview the country could potentially receive more donations of this nature.
The Verocell vaccine, made by the pharmaceutical company Sinopharm, has an efficacy of 79.3% in preventing symptomatic illness, and 100% in preventing serious illness. It is administered in two doses, spaced within 21 days, and is effective for a period of two years.
