The US has concluded the second joint military training in Mozambique against the terrorist threat in Cabo Delgado, in the north of the country, the US embassy announced on Monday.
“The United States remains committed to helping Mozambique combat terrorism and prevent the spread of violent extremism,” said US Ambassador Dennis Hearne during the closing ceremony of the training on Friday and quoted in a statement today.
The document added that the training of US Special Operations Forces and 100 Mozambican Comandos lasted six weeks to prevent the spread of terrorism and strengthen cooperation between the two countries.
The preparation came after an initial two-month training course for Mozambican marines, which ended in May.
The US Department of Defence plans to hold more training with Marines and Commandos from Mozambique’s Armed and Defence Forces (FADM).
Since July, the US has also conducted a second medical training programme for combat situations in which 60 FADM soldiers participated.
“The medical personnel who participated in the training are now certified to train fellow service members,” the statement said.
The US also included members of the FADM in the Cutlass Express regional maritime exercise.
Cabo Delgado is a province rich in natural gas but terrorised since 2017 by armed rebels, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The conflict has led to more than 3,100 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and more than 817,000 displaced people, according to Mozambican authorities.
Since July, an offensive by government troops with support from Rwanda has allowed for increased security, recovering several areas where there was a rebel presence, including the town of Mocímboa da Praia, which had been occupied since August 2020.
