The Mozambican government is to invest US$200 million (€168 million) in improving roads in Cabo Delgado province in northern Mozambique, the Minister of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources announced on Friday.
“We are investing approximately US$200 million in Cabo Delgado province [for access roads]. It is a significant investment,” Minister João Machatine told journalists during a visit to Cabo Delgado province.
Interventions will begin in August, Minister Machatine said, reiterating the importance of the “major investment” being carried out to the highest standards.
“We want the consultants, inspectors and contractors to be chosen very judiciously,” Machatine said.
Cabo Delgado hosts the natural gas exploration project led by Total, at about €20 billion the largest private investment in Africa, since suspended due to insecurity in the region.
Armed groups have terrorised Cabo Delgado province since 2017, with some attacks being claimed by the Islamic State group.
More than 3,100 have lost their lives, according to the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project (ACLED), and more than 817,000 people are internally displaced, according to the Mozambican authorities.
