The World Bank has urged the Mozambican government to bolster Mozambique’s role in the supply of electricity to Southern Africa, in a context in which global economic prospects are “not encouraging”.
The appeal was made in Washington, United States, by the World Bank’s Managing Director of Operations, Anna Bjerde, at a meeting with a Mozambican delegation headed by the Minister of Economy and Finance, Max Tonela, which included senior staff from the Bank of Mozambique.
“We are starting 2023 with a gloomy outlook for global growth. What we are seeing is countries that depend on food imports suffer from problems of food insecurity as a result of disruptions in cereal supply chains, and domestic food production has also been affected because of climate impacts,” Bjerde said.
Anna Bjerde pointed out as an example the need to complete the construction of the Temane Thermal Power Plant, an investment of around US$700 million by the companies Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM), Sasol and Globeleq, with funding from the World Bank, FMO, the Emerging Africa Infrastructure Fund, the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC) and the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID).
