The Mozambican organisation Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) on Friday estimated that the Paquitequete beach in Pemba, the provincial capital of Cabo Delgado, has been receiving up to 1,000 displaced people per day since Saturday.
These are residents who lived mainly from subsistence farming on their land, who had to abandon and flee by boat from the northern part of the region, attacked by armed rebels.
This is a new wave of displaced people, which has occurred periodically since the conflict began three years ago, waves that have intensified this year as the conflict between insurgents and the Mozambican defence and security forces (FDS) ramped up.
According to the CDD, the first assistance on the beach is being provided by the Tzu Chi Charity Foundation, the World Food Programme (WFP), the Mozambique Red Cross (CVM), Kuendeleia, Kupendana and the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGC).
The priorities are to treat the sick, alleviate hunger and find shelter – increasingly complicated tasks in and around Pemba, as many residents are already receiving displaced people – which the CDD estimates will reach 100,000 in the provincial capital area, including the surrounding refugee camps of Metuge.
On Wednesday, Armindo Ngunga, the secretary of state of the province said that the authorities will seek to allocate land to the displaced so that they can start their lives again.
Cabo Delgado province, in the north of Mozambique, has been the scene of armed attacks by forces classified as terrorists for three years.
In all, the Mozambican government and relief organisations, notably UN agencies, point to a total of 300,000 displaced due to the conflict in Cabo Delgado.
There are different estimates for the number of deaths, ranging from 1,000 to 2,000.
