A pest as yet unidentified is compromising cashew nut production targets in Manhiça district, Maputo province.
The disease is characterised by the drying and dropping of cashew tree flowers, which makes it impossible for the fruit to develop.
As an example, of the approximately 220 tons of planned cashew crop, so far only 60 tons have been produced, corresponding to 30% of target.
Representing the Almond Institute in Manhiça and Magude districts, Albino Saveca indicates climate change as a possible cause of the pest and says that efforts are underway to address the problem.
With 400 producers, Manhiça district in Maputo province is currently the country’s largest producer of cashew nuts, with the capacity to earn seven million meticais from sales.
