A disease unknown to breeders and veterinary authorities in Manica province killed more than 900 head of cattle In December of 2023, in the districts of Manica, Sussundenga and Báruè.
Breeders are concerned and are hoping for an urgent response from investigatory veterinary authorities to prevent further losses.
Fernando Cupenha, a cattle breeder from the village of Manhene in Manica district, one of the regions worst affected by the outbreak, rues the situation, and asks the veterinary authorities to accelerate diagnosis of the disease so that an adequate response can be identified.
Cupenha said that the disease, characterised by lack of appetite and loss of strength, is reducing cattle numbers to an extent that may compromise food security, with farmers losing even the means to farm the fields.
“Cattle are a source of wealth for families in the province, because it is through them that the land is worked, people and goods are transported, in addition to being sold, when necessary, to make ends meet,” he said.
Luís Sabonete, from Messica, says that technicians from the Provincial Livestock and Economic Activities Service (SPPAE) took blood samples from sick animals for laboratory analysis, but there has not yet been any “feedback”.
