A university lecturer and member of the Mozambican Agricultural Research Institute was found dead on Friday in Marracuene, on the outskirts of the capital, Maputo, a police source told Lusa on Saturday.
Carvalho Ecole had been missing since Monday and was found dead in his car in Marracuene, 27 kilometres from the centre of the capital, Maputo province spokesman for the Mozambique Police Fernando Manhiça said.
“We are investigating to establish out what really happened,” he added.
Given visible signs of torture, the family believes it was a homicide, the victim’s son Filipe Theodor said, according to STV.
Sources in the Mozambican Agricultural Research Institute consulted on Saturday by Lusa said that the victim had disappeared from his workplace on Monday, leaving all his belongings in his office.
Carvalho Ecole held a PhD in Agronomy from the Federal University of Lavras, Brazil, and died in a year he was honoured for his research in both Brazil and Mozambique.
