Universities must invest more in research and innovation, focusing on finding sustainable solutions to the problems facing the country.
Such was the challenge presented by President Nyusi yesterday at the inauguration in Maputo of the new rectors of the Lúrio (UniLúrio) university, Leda Hugo; Zambeze (UniZambeze), Bettencourt Capece; as well as the vice-rectors of the Eduardo Mondlane University, Joel Tembe; Joaquim Chissano University, Ana Maria Nhampule; and UniZambeze, Anabela Silva.
The head of state asked national higher education establishments to reduce geographical and gender disparities in access to higher education, and to combining expansion with international quality standards.
Nyusi urged the new inductees to improve management models through permanent dialogue with the academic community.
The highest magistrate in the nation said it made no sense for institutions that taught management courses to manifest deficiencies in the same area, a fault that ended up being reflected in research.
“The investigation is a process that cannot be cyclically interrupted. For this reason, the organisation, consolidation and operation of a university cannot always be conditioned by superior decisions or choices,” President Nyusi commented.
In a context of rapid social, economic and technological change, the president said, universities must anticipate phenomena, something requiring the introduction of institutional reforms.
In order to remain attractive and relevant, higher education establishments should seek and retain talented teachers, students and researchers.
“The quality of human resources is a reliable indicator of performance for an institution that aims to achieve international recognition,” he said.
President Nyusi suggested that academics think about transitioning from the current model of excessive competition between universities to that of sharing resources and synergies, thereby improving the social and economic fabric of the country.
