Mozambique’s national teachers’ union has vehemently condemned the violent behaviour of the teacher who beat his wife and set her on fire, Rádio Encontro Nampula reported on Saturday.
Last week, social networks were flooded with reports that a teacher identified as of Guilhermino Luís, had beaten and murdered his wife, Janeth Manuel, also a teacher.
The teacher allegedly used petrol to end his wife’s life.
The Nampula provincial secretariat Mozambique’s the national teachers’ union (ONP) has published a letter of repudiation, condemning the brutal murder and complaining that the criminal attitude of a handful of teachers besmirches the reputation of the professional class generally.
This behaviour runs counter to the mission that society has entrusted to teachers, which is to educate and train the new man.
The statement received in Rádio Encontro newsroom recalls other romances between teachers which ended in tragedy, such as that of Teresa Pedro Riquixa, who barbarously executed her husband and buried him in a pit covered with cement in 2017.
This year, three teachers in Rapale district came together in a gang which terrorised the population of Ribaué, where they went to steal goods.
