It was supposed to be another day at work for the monitoring and evaluation team of the Provincial Police Command of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) in Niassa – but it ended in tragedy. At around 5:00 a.m. last Friday, on the stretch of road between the Luatize river and the main town of Mavago district, where the inspection was to take place, the team of inspectors was ambushed by armed men, who murdered the driver of the vehicle.
As far as we know, the unknown attackers barricaded the road, forcing the police team to stop to clear it. At that moment the group started shooting, hitting the driver in the head, and killing him on the spot.
The remaining members of the team are receiving medical treatment at Lichinga Provincial Hospital (HPL).
According to Alves Mathe, police spokesperson for the PRM in Niassa, the reasons for the ambush remain unknown, and the authorities continue to investigate the case.
The team, which included the Provincial Director of Personnel and Training, the Head of the Department of Internal Information, the Head of Inspectorate and their driver, was in Mavago to assess the performance of the PRM leadership.
