The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has provided almost $200,000 (€160,000) for the rehabilitation and equipping of the neonatal unit of Maputo Central Hospital, the country’s main hospital, UNICEF said in a press release.
“The investment made by UNICEF in Maputo Central Hospital aims to improve the quality of care provided to newborns hospitalised here, increasing their chances of survival,” the statement said.
The investment will serve to rehabilitate the infrastructures, creating space for seriously ill newborns, as well as improving the working conditions of health professionals.
“This intervention was focused on the biggest causes of neonatal mortality in the country, such as prematurity, complications of birth – asphyxia and infections,” the statement added.
Maputo Central Hospital is the largest in the country, with seven clinical departments and serving an average of 900 users per day.
It has an inpatient capacity of 1,500 beds, distributed across several departments and support services in various medical and surgical areas.
