The United Nations Children’s Fund in Mozambique (UNICEF) yesterday revealed that it is working with the Mozambican government to ensure the safe return of students to schools.
“We are supporting the government in all areas, and the Ministry for Human Development in particular. This return to school should not happen overnight; it has to be done on the basis of good planning, in order to ensure that students and teachers can be completely safe and avoid coronavirus infection,” Katarina Johansson, UNICEF’s interim representative in Mozambique, said.
“For example, that there must be water and sanitation conditions, and also to ensure that we can have the physical distance to make classrooms safe for children. We really have to work to see this new way through, in all sectors,” Johansson said.
Johansson expressed the need for everyone, from parents and guardians to the authorities in general, to engage in the bid to protect children from the new coronavirus.
“We have measures like staying at home, but that is not easy, for several reasons. Parents, family, and other stakeholders have to make every effort to ensure children’s protection,” she said.
The UNICEF interim representative in Mozambique was speaking on Wednesday after meeting President of the Assembly of the Republic Esperança Bias and reaffirming UNICEF’s support.
“The President of the Assembly of the Republic asked for UNICEF’s continued support in its strategic actions, particularly in training, especially now that deputies will enter the monitoring phase in their respective circles,” Bias’s spokesperson, Oriel Chemane, said.
