The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has launched an appeal to raise US$98.8 million (87 million euros) to “assist 1.2 million people”, half of them children, in Mozambique in 2022, it announced.
Access to water, education, mental health and vitamin A supplements are some of UNICEF’s specific priorities, along with other basic needs such as food and shelter.
The UN agency aims to “address the needs of women and children and prepare for the high risk of extreme weather events in the country,” such as cyclones, which usually happen between December and April.
“The humanitarian situation in Mozambique is critical, particularly in Cabo Delgado, where almost 856,000 people, including 414,000 children, are displaced and in need of humanitarian assistance,” it says.
UNICEF also intends to strengthen its work “to report, monitor and respond to grave violations against children”.
Cabo Delgado province is rich in natural gas but has been terrorised since 2017 by armed rebels in a conflict that has led to more than 3,100 deaths, according to the ACLED conflict registration project, and more than 817,000 displaced people, according to Mozambican authorities.
