Mozambique was on Thursday unanimously elected a non-permanent member of the Security Council of the United Nations, filling the vacancy that it was this year Africa’s turn to occupy and for which it was running unopposed, following agreement in Africa.
Mozambique represented the Southern Africa sub-region in this year’s Security Council elections, according to the African Group rotation pattern.

Elections for seats allocated to African Member States are generally uncontested, as the African Group maintains an established rotation pattern among its five sub-regions (North Africa, Southern Africa, East Africa, West Africa and Central Africa ).
Three non-permanent seats are always allocated to Africa: one seat is elected every even calendar year, and two are contested during odd-numbered years.
Mozambique is among five new members elected this year (along with Ecuador, Japan, Malta and Switzerland) who will occupy their seats from January 1, 2023 to December 31, 2024.
Ecuador received 190 votes, Japan 184, Malta 185, and Switzerland 187.
Verónica Macamo, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Communication of Mozambique, said on Wednesday in an interview with Lusa that the country’s experience in combating terrorism in Cabo Delgado will be important in the new roles.

“We will take not only our experience”, but also the report “of the practice that terrorists use to terrorize people, because that’s what they exist for, to destroy, to kill, to steal, in short, to do everything that is negative.” , that harms the populations, that harms the countries”, he lamented.
Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi scheduled for the end of the day an adress to the nation regarding today’s election.
The Security Council is the only U.N. body that can make legally binding decisions like imposing sanctions and authorizing use of force. It has five permanent veto-wielding members: the United States, Britain, France, China and Russia.
