The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) has set up six special tents in health units in the district of Pemba, northern Mozambique, to care for pregnant women, given the risk of infection by the new coronavirus, the organisation said on Tuesday.
The UNFPA said the tents will provide pre- and postnatal care and family planning services.
“The lack of health services in the context of the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic will have an impact on the reproductive health of women and girls, putting them at risk of unplanned pregnancy and life-threatening complications related to childbirth,” said the UN agency’s note.
The equipment will allow adequate social distance between pregnant women and other health unit users, reducing the risk of contamination by the new coronavirus.
“With the new tents, it will be possible to isolate patients and separate services, prioritising the protection of women and girls,” said Rodrigues Armando, director of the Mahate health centre, one of the villages that received tents.
The organisation recalls that Cabo Delgado was a province hard hit by Cyclone Kenneth in April 2019.
UNFPA said it will distribute tents for medical care to women and girls in areas affected by Cyclone Idai in Sofala province, central Mozambique.
In that region, the organisation has already donated protection material from Covid-19.
The country registers 76 cases of infection by the new coronavirus, with no record of deaths.
