On 5 December, the UK Government led an event focused on connecting women-led businesses and the energy industry, mainly in the province of Cabo Delgado. The initiative was carried out jointly by the UK and Mozambican governments and various partners from the private sector and international organisations.
The International Trade Centre’s (ITC) SheTrades Commonwealth+ programme carried out a study to identify challenges and opportunities, as well as provide recommendations for connecting Mozambican women-led companies as suppliers in various sectors, with a particular focus on the energy and ancillary industries. This study also aimed to generate knowledge about Mozambique’s local content and guidelines for potential investors and project promoters.
The event, which took place on Tuesday 5 December in the city of Pemba, was attended by representatives of the UK government and the Mozambican government, represented by MIREME and the Governor of Cabo Delgado Province and Banking in Mozambique. Also present were the organisations ENH/Linkar, Mozup and IPEME/Mozyweb, which presented initiatives that have been supporting the empowerment and training of women-led businesses.
During the event, the Governor of Cabo Delgado Province, Valige Tauabo, spoke about the importance of boosting the local economy in favour of inclusive growth:
“It is important to prepare the women of Cabo Delgado to carry out their activities more productively. It’s important that women who produce or provide services know the real value of their products and the mechanisms available to place them where they can earn the most income.”
The British High Commissioner in Mozambique Helen Lewis, travelled to Pemba for the event and had a few words to say about the importance of local content:
“If we deliberately focus on local businesses led by women, recognising their experience and potential in different fields, they can benefit from the opportunities created by megaprojects.”
In March this year, the UK launched the International Strategy for Women and Girls, which aims to Educate Women and Girls, Empower Women and Girls primarily to safeguard their sexual and reproductive rights and to actively participate in economic development, and finally eliminate all forms of gender-based violence.
This event is part of a series of initiatives that, in partnership with the Mozambican government and local organisations, will boost women’s economic empowerment in Cabo Delgado and the rest of the country.
