As part of celebrations of 45 years of cooperation between the Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) and Italian academia, the UEM, the Embassy of Italy in Mozambique and the Maputo Office of the Italian Agency for Cooperation for Development (AICS) are this Friday, 25th of November, holding a solemn, commemorative ceremony under the motto “UEM – Italy: Past, Present and Prospects for Cooperation”.
The objective of the event is to present the historical path of partnership relations between UEM and Italy, structured on the experiences and good practices in the management of university cooperation initiatives to support the UEM transformation process into a University of excellence and at the service of sustainable development in Mozambique.
Together, Mozambican and Italian academics will reflect on the capitalisation of experiences, good practices and new actions/forms of support and/or perspectives of cooperation in the fields of training, teaching, research, extension and institutional capacity building, with a view to identifying new cooperation initiatives between UEM and Italy.
Over these 45 years (1977-2022), the UEM has celebrated around 70 cooperation instruments with various Italian institutions of higher education and scientific research, aiming to promote and implement various initiatives, with emphasis on the areas of Architecture and Physical Planning , Agronomy and Forest Engineering, Medicine, Sciences, Economics, Literature and Social Sciences, Biotechnology, Informatics and Communication Technologies, Gender Issues, Museology, Culture, Communication and Art.
Throughout this cooperation, which was consecrated right after Mozambique’s independence, the multiple academic mobility initiatives stand out, through which thousands of UEM students and teachers benefited from academic programs and activities, through scholarships.
Among the cooperation partners, Italy was among the first to provide technical and institutional support to the university sector in the country. Support already in 1976 focused on the Faculties of Geology and Medicine, extending, in the following years, to the Faculties of Agronomy and Economics. It is also due to Italian cooperation the creation of the Faculty of Architecture and Physical Planning.
Initially, Italian cooperation with UEM was almost exclusively oriented towards the education sector; later, it also turned to research as an instrument for training and updating courses for national teachers and a factor for the country’s economic and social growth.
The solemn ceremony is attended by around 150 guests in person, including Rectors and Vice-Rectors, representatives of governments, diplomatic missions, governmental and non-governmental organizations, professors/researchers, technical-administrative staff, students/alumni beneficiaries of scholarships financed by the Italian Government, and other guests from civil society interested in stimulating and contributing to the strengthening and development of Higher Education in Mozambique and the Eduardo Mondlane University, in particular.
