The Center for Documentation and Photographic Training (CDFF), in partnership with the School of Communication and Arts (ECA) at Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM), will host celebrations of World Photography Day on the 18th and 19th of this month.
Under the motto “Mozambican Photography: 50 Years of a Changing Perspective”, the event will feature debates, exhibitions, creative workshops and food and craft fairs reflecting the evolution and diversity of imagery in Mozambique.
On August 18th, the ECA will host professionals, academics and students for a discussion on the history and challenges of national photography, and a photography exhibition depicting the 50th anniversary of National Independence.
The following day, the Center for Documentation and Photographic Training (CDFF) opens its doors to the public with a cultural immersion, “where art intertwines with Mozambican identity, an initiative that not only honours half a century of visual recordings but also reinforces the role of photography as a mirror of society, capable of capturing change, telling stories and uniting communities”.
About World Photography Day
World Photography Day 2025 is celebrated on August 19 – the day on which, in 1839, the French government purchased the patent for the daguerreotype process, and then offered it free to the world.
World Photography Day marks the creation of the daguerreotype process in 1837 by Louis Daguerre and Joseph Nicephore Niepce. The process allowed highly detailed photographs to be created on a sheet of copper paper coated with silver. The process revolutionised the photography industry as the first practical photographic process.
However, World Photography Day wasn’t recognised as an international event until 1991. This came about when Indian photographer, OP Sharma, conceived the idea and proposed it to around 150 master photographers around the world. At the beginning of 1991, a decision was made and World Photographer Day began being celebrated that same year.
What Is a Daguerreotype?
Daguerreotype was a photographic process invented by Louis Daguerre. It was the first publicly available photographic process and was widely used during the 1840s and 1850s. The process was almost entirely superseded by 1856 by the invention of newer processes that were both cheaper and produced images more quickly.
World Photography Week
World Photography Day became so popular that in 2022, World Photography Week was introduced. This is, in fact, a two-week celebration that will take place from August 12th – August 26th.
Each year, World Photography Day has a theme. The 2025 theme is “An Entire Day”.
