The Eduardo Mondlane University (UEM) will hold a ceremony posthumously awarding the honorary title of Doctor Honoris Causa to President of the People’s Republic of Mozambique, Samora Moisés Machel, at the University Cultural Centre in Maputo, on Friday (20-06).
UEM states that Samora Machel believed in transformative education, in moral and participatory governance and in citizenship that begins with truth.
The largest and oldest university in the country says it pays tribute to the man who made education his weapon and freedom his mission.
Samora Machel was born in Chilembene, in the district of Chókwè, in the province of Gaza, on 29 September, 1933, and died on 19 October, 1986, when the plane carrying him back to Maputo from a peacekeeping mission in the city of Ndoola, Zambia, crashed.
Samora Machel proclaimed national independence on 25 June 1975, at the Machava Stadium.
