August 24, 2020 – The Embassy of the United States of America strongly condemns an apparent August 23 arson attack on the Maputo headquarters of Canal de Moçambique, an important independent newspaper in Mozambique.
The apparently intentional and extensive damage at the offices of a respected media institution impacts the state of freedom of speech and freedom of the press in Mozambique.
Independent media entities like Canal de Moçambique play a critical role in building a functioning democracy that relies on a flow of information and a vibrant exchange of views and opinions.
We urge the relevant Mozambican authorities to conduct a thorough investigation to ensure that those responsible for the arson are brought to justice.
