Three people of the same family have been shot by criminals in the Namagoa region, Mocuba district, in the central Mozambican province of Zambezia, according to the independent daily “O País.”
According to the paper, a four-year-old boy is fighting for his life at Quelimane Central Hospital, while another two-year-old boy has died.
The father, who was also shot, is in critical condition in Mocuba Rural Hospital. The child was admitted at around 10.00 on Tuesday to Quelimane Central Hospital, after doctors were unable to treat him in Mocuba, given the complexity of the site where the bullet lodged in his neck.
According to the minors’ grandmother, Ana Maria Luís, on Sunday night six criminals entered the home of her son, who is a shopkeeper.
Afterwards, she explained, the attackers shot her son and the two children.
“I’m here, in hospital, accompanying my grandson, who is hospitalized at Quelimane Central Hospital. The only person who came out unscathed in the raid by the criminals was my son’s wife”, said Luís.
She added that “six men and my son’s wife came at night; my daughter-in-law, who heard the noise of the bandits, shouted for her husband to get up. The husband did so, but was soon shot twice, hitting his abdomen and his hand. Other shots hit my two-year-old grandson in the stomach, and he died on the spot. Another shot hit the four-year-old who is receiving medical attention at Quelimane Central Hospital. The father of this child, my son, is in the emergency room being cared for by doctors in Mocuba.”
Doctors say that the child had hypoglycaemia, “so he was immediately hydrated to continue to the operating theatre to remove the bullet stuck in his neck. The boy is in a serious condition, but everything will be done to save him.”
