A group of Islamist terrorists on Sunday attacked two vehicles, escorted by the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS), along National Road 380 (EN380), in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
According to sources cited by the independent newsheet “Carta de Moçambique”, the attack occurred at Pedreira village, in the locality of Moja, Quissanga district, resulting in one injury and damage to the vehicles.
The situation forced all vehicles following those that were attacked to retreat, returning to their starting point in Silva Macua. Traffic only resumed some time later, with the support of a unit of the Rwanda Defence Forces, who have been supporting the Mozambican forces in the fight against terrorism.
The attack occurred two days after another group of armed men intercepted several vehicles on the stretch between Nangololo and the 19 October village, demanding payments ranging from 10,000 to 30,000 meticais (from 150 to 400 dollars, at the current exchange rate).
According to some passengers, the armed men also looted food supplies being transported in trucks bound for Macomia district as part of food aid to displaced households.
Currently, the Mozambican Forces provide two military escorts along the EN380, one from the Silva Macua stretch in the district of Ancuabe to Macomia town, and another from this point to the Oasse crossroads in the district of Mocímboa da Praia.
