Two reporters from a Mozambican television channel were attacked on Tuesday by residents of a district of Nampula, the provincial capital in the north of the country when they were interviewing an evicted family, a sector association said on Wednesday.
“The incident occurred on Tuesday in the neighbourhood of Muatala, Nampula, when the two journalists wanted to collect statements and images of a citizen who had been evicted, along with her children, by her ex-husband,” the Southern African Institute for Social Communication (Misa Moçambique) said in a statement.
In addition to the aggression, the journalists from Media Mais TV “saw their equipment seized by some individuals who were on the spot”, and have not managed to recover it yet.
The case was reported to the police and the photo-journalist received medical care at Nampula Central Hospital, Misa added.
“Misa Mozambique condemns this act and asks the institutions of justice to hold the perpetrators of the crime, duly identified,” he said.
In the same communiqué, Misa expressed its solidarity with journalists from Nangololo community radio, in Muidumbe district, Cabo Delgado, whose facilities were destroyed by rebel groups attacking the region.
The attack forced nine journalists to flee into the woods, where some spent more than a week until they reached safety.
“Misa Mozambique condemns these barbaric acts of terrorism and sympathises with the victims”, it said.
