Screen grab: Miramar
Three individuals, two of them foreigners, have been arrested by police in Tete on suspicion of being part of a drug trafficking network.
Following the arrest, 1.2 kilograms of cannabis sativa and 830 grams of heroin, locally known as ‘zombo’, were seized. The drugs, hidden in boxes of food products and baby diapers, were seized on Saturday.
The two individuals of Nigerian nationality, tasked, according to the authorities, with receiving the drug and contacting potential buyers, claim that they did not know what was contained in the seized boxes and packaging.
They are owners of commercial establishments, and the police are not ruling out the possibility that they were using their stores to distribute the drugs.
According to the police, the Nigerians have no criminal record, but have been living in the country illegally for about five years.
