Two more illegal miners died while searching for precious stones in the Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) concession area in Cabo Delgado province, the company told Lusa on Tuesday.
The victims drowned in the water reserve area inside the mining concession, after 150 illegal miners invaded the site around 05:00 (04:00 Lisbon) Wednesday, looking for precious stones, according to a note sent to Lusa today.
“MRM personnel were on the scene, along with the police, and helped with the rescue operation,” the note said, adding that another miner was rescued.
“The incident was brought to the attention of the authorities, both provincial and national, in the hope that more assertive proactive action will be taken against the funding of groups that facilitate and encourage the illegal trade of Mozambican rubies,” the company added.
According to the company, which has warned of the consequences of illegal mining in the region, since the beginning of the year there has been a growing trend of invasions in the area, culminating in more than 20 fatalities.
The most serious case happened at the beginning of February when 11 illegal miners died buried in MRM’s concession.
MRM owns 34,000 hectares of a ruby mining concession in Cabo Delgado and is the leading investor in ruby mining in Mozambique, 75% owned by Gemfields and 25% by Mwiriti Limitada.
