Two more of Mozambique’s Covid-19 patients have now made a full recovery, the Ministry of Health revealed this Wednesday (06), announcing that all 174 samples tested in the previous 24 hours had come back negative. Public health officials have meanwhile admitted that there has been a delay in the testing process for the 880 Total employees in camps on the Afungi peninsula in Cabo Delgado province.
The National Director of Public Health announced that the 174 tests carried out in the last 24 hours in the laboratory of the National Institute of Health “turned out to be negative for Covid-19” and therefore “our country continues to have 81 cumulative registered cases of Covid-19 infection, of which 72 are of local transmission and nine are imported”.
“We wish also to share that we have registered, in the last 24 hours, two more cases completely recovered from previous Covid-19 infection. These are cases 28 and 43, from Cabo Delgado. Both were asymptomatic, and underwent quarantine in home isolation. Mozambique therefore now has 21 previously infected people who have fully recovered, and we want also to emphasise that, to date, we have no deaths related to Covid-19.” Dr Rosa Marlene added.
Regarding the testing of the Total workers on the Afungi peninsula, National Director for the Health Survey and Monitoring Dr Sérgio Chicumbe acknowledged that “we expect the completion of the testing process” – originally scheduled for Tuesday (05) – “in the next two days”.
“The plan is, after we are sure that all individuals have been tested, to ensure that only a minimum contingent for the basic functioning remains in the camps, because the sites cannot be abandoned completely,” Dr Chicumbe explained. “Actual dates on how long this closure will persist will depend on the dynamics of the epidemic. It would be premature to make any projections at the moment.”
