Nineteen people infected with the new coronavirus were admitted to health facilities in Mozambique between Sunday and Monday, a record for any 24-hour period, health authorities said, while simultaneously announcing 154 new cases and two more deaths from Covid-19.
Two Mozambican men, both 58 years old, died from Covid-19, one in the city of Maputo on January 3 and the other in Manica province on January 2, “after their clinical condition worsened during hospitalisation,” head of health surveillance at the Ministry of Health [MISAU], Lorna Gujral, said.
Of the newly hospitalised patients, 11 reside in the city of Maputo, three in Manica, three in Tete, one in Zambézia and one in Nampula.
Speaking in Maputo yesterday at the weekly Covid-19 press update, Doctor Gujral said that 89 patients were fighting for their lives in Covid-19 treatment centres spread across six provinces, 73 of them in Maputo city.
Of the hospitalized individuals, forty-nine (49) are in moderate clinical condition (55.1%), thirty-five (35) are in severe clinical condition (39.3%), and five (5) cases are in critical clinical condition (5.6%).
MISAU reports that the “inpatients suffer from various chronic pathologies, the most frequent of which are arterial hypertension (46%) and diabetes (17%)”.
She regretted the fact that most of the patients, whose health had worsened to the point of their being hospitalised, had arrived at hospital late, making their recovery problematic. She urged families with Covid-19 patients to refer them to inpatient centres at the first sign of the disease worsening.
Continuing the trend of the first days of the month, 154 new infections were detected among 1,375 samples tested, all cases of local transmission. Of the newly diagnosed cases, 68 were reported in the capital, 31 in Niassa, 23 in Maputo, 15 in Zambézia, 12 in Gaza province, four in Cabo Delgado and one in Inhambane province.
Mozambique has now recorded a cumulative total of 19,463 positive cases since the start of the outbreak, of which 19,147 are locally transmitted and 316 imported. Doctor Gujral meanwhile shared news of a further 63 recoveries, bringing the total number of people free from the disease to 16,828.
Mozambique currently has 2,460 active cases of Covid-19, with Maputo city leading with 1,789, followed by Maputo province with 221 active cases, Cabo Delgado with 98, Niassa with 76 , Nampula with 70, Sofala with 70, Tete with 41, Zambézia with 40, Gaza with 34, Manica with 20, and Inhambane province with one active case.
