Two men aged 19 and 50 died of asphyxiation while trying to save a duck that fell into a well in the Liberdade neighbourhood of Chimoio city, in Manica province.
The misfortune occurred last Wednesday afternoon (17-01) when the duck fell into the 20-plus metres-deep well.
After numerous attempts to rescue it by the duck’s owners, a man of Zimbabwean nationality was on the following day persuaded, by the offer of 150 meticais, to try to retrieve the animal.
The Zimbabwean man, who had come to Mozambique with his wife of Malawian origin to visit relatives, descended into the well, but never resurfaced.
And in an attempt to rescue the first victim, and the duck, another citizen – this time, a Mozambican bricklayer – also descended into the well, only to suffer the same fate.
Laurinda Joaquim, deputy secretary of Neighbourhood 4 in Liberdade, regrets the “tragedy”.
“All the residents are sad about what happened, because we only hear of things like this happening in other neighbourhoods. For us, it is unusual, and for that reason, we are in mourning,” she said.
She went on to appeal to the population not to be foolhardy and do dangerous things for money.
Meanwhile, the Public Safety Corps (firefighters) in Chimoio managed to remove the bodies of the two victims from the well only after hours of trying.
