An ambulance transferring patients and those accompanying them from Nacala to Nampula Central Hospital was involved in a road accident in Monapo district, Nampula province, on Tuesday.
PRM spokesperson for Nampula, Zacarias Nacute, said on Wednesday that the vehicle, travelling at high speed, went off the road and overturned after two of its tires burst. The authorities presume that speeding was the cause of the accident.
Of the five people inside the ambulance, two died at the scene of the accident, Nacute said.
The driver, an eight-month-old baby girl and her companion were admitted to Nampula Central Hospital (HCN) in serious condition, but were now under medical care, according to Emídio de Jesus Givavisse, the hospital’s chief physician.
Nacute added that the bodies of the deceased were, as of Wednesday, in the HCN morgue pending further developments.
