Two criminal gangs, thought to be behind crimes in Lichinga city and Muembe district and allegedly led by agents of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), have been neutralised in Niassa province.
The gangs between them comprised eight members, five of whom have been arrested, with the other three currently at large.
One of the police officers arrested confessed to being involved in criminal activity. “I was involved in a robbery in Muembe. They used machetes, I only passed on information, telling them that ‘Here they have someone who has money, [in] Muembe district.’ she said.
The head of public relations at the Provincial PRM Command in Niassa, Alves Mathe, said that various goods had been recovered from the hands of the detainees.
“What concerns us most is the involvement of two of our fellow PRM members. I can state here and categorically that these individuals will receive severe and exemplary punishment. In addition to the successive robberies that they committed, disciplinary and criminal proceedings against these individuals are simultaneously underway,” the PRM spokesperson said.
