The Mozambican police on Friday detained two people surprised in the possession of 15 kilos of heroin.
The suspects had driven with the drug from the northern city of Nampula, and were presented to reporters at the 15th Maputo police precinct, on the outskirts of the capital.
“We became aware of the movement of this heavy vehicle which left Nampula and that its final destination was Maputo. Our information was that it was indeed carrying drugs”, the Maputo city police spokesperson, Leonel Muchina, told a press conference.
The authorities intercepted the truck after its arrival in the outlying Maputo neighbourhood of George Dimitrov. “We found that inside the vehicle there was a false bottom, prepared specifically to hide the drugs, and 15 kilos of heroin were discovered there”, said Muchina.
He added that the two men detained have confirmed that this is not their first time they have transported drugs from Nampula to Maputo. They said their instructions were to park the truck in a particular spot, and a second group would take charge of unloading the heroin.
They were supposed to take the truck back to Nampula, and pick up another shipment of drugs, which would again be hidden under the false bottom.
The police believe this is a gang specialised in drug trafficking, “With these arrests, we have taken a great step forward”, said Muchina, “and we have become aware of the innovative way used by these individuals to hide the drugs”.
The 45 year old truck driver (whose name was not released) said he was unaware that the vehicle was carrying drugs, and did not know the final destination.
