Mozambican police have arrested two men in possession of 230 kilograms of cannabis being transported in sacks in Mocuba district, Zambézia province, central Mozambique, a police source told Lusa on Monday.
The arrest took place on Saturday during inspection operations in the district. The police intercepted a vehicle carrying cannabis concealed in 23 sacks of cassava, said Miguel Caetano, head of public relations for the Mozambican Republic Police (PRM) in Zambézia province.
“During a search, our officers became suspicious and stopped them. When the sacks were opened at the subunit, it was confirmed that they contained significant quantities of Cannabis sativa, weighing 230 kilograms,” Caetano told Lusa.
According to the police, the ‘shipment’ was leaving Mocuba and was bound for Nampula province in northern Mozambique.
The alleged owner and the driver of the vehicle are being held at a local police subunit in Mocuba, Caetano said, adding that a cannabis cultivation field covering about half a hectare was also dismantled in the same district.
“All the plants from the field were removed, but it does not belong to the same group,” said the PRM spokesperson in Zambézia, adding that the owners of the field fled when they saw the police arriving. Investigations are under way to locate and arrest them.
The production, use, and consumption of cannabis are prohibited in Mozambique. According to the Mozambican Public Prosecutor’s Office, cannabis remains among the most trafficked drugs in 2024.
Last year alone, Mozambican authorities seized 1,856 kilograms of cannabis — a 1% increase compared to 2023, when 1,853 kilograms were confiscated.
