Two alleged terrorists have been captured by paramilitaries in the community of Homba, Mueda district, Cabo Delgado province, local sources told Lusa yesterday. They were neutralised on Tuesday morning, when a group of local forces (paramilitaries that support the fight against terrorism) were on patrol in the village of Homba, abandoned due to an attack last week.
“We captured two young men. They are from the community, part of the group of terrorists that killed an old man at the beginning of the month,” said a member of the local force, speaking from the village of Nanhala.
According to the same source, the two alleged terrorists confessed and were handed over to the Police of the Republic of Mozambique in Mueda district.
The communities of Mandela, Mapate, district of Muidumbe and Homba, all in Mueda, remain abandoned due to the suspected presence of the rebels, who have already killed at least four people, all civilians.
Since October 2017, the gas-rich province of Cabo Delgado has been facing an armed rebellion with attacks claimed by movements associated with the extremist Islamic State group.
The last major attack took place on 10 and 11 May in the district headquarters of Macomia, with around a hundred insurgents looting the town, causing several deaths and heavy fighting with the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces and the Rwandan military, which is supporting Mozambique in the fight against the rebels.
